IOTECH HISTORIAN SERVICE
EDGE HISTORIAN OVERVIEW
The IOTech Edge Historian Service provides a scalable, industrial-grade solution for long-term telemetry and command data storage at the edge. Purpose-built to address operational and compliance needs, the service ensures fast, reliable, and secure handling of high-volume, time-stamped data, even in remote, offline, or resource-constrained environments.
Built on TimescaleDB and PostgreSQL, Edge Historian enables efficient time-series data management optimized for industrial workloads and edge deployments.
EDGE HISTORIAN APPLICATIONS
Industrial Compliance
Long-term storage of telemetry data to meet regulatory requirements.
Operational Analytics
Feed time-series data to local or cloud-based analytics systems.
Disconnected Operations
Retain data even when cloud connectivity is intermittent or unavailable.
Remote Monitoring
Access historical device behavior and system trends at the edge.
CONNECTED DATA SOURCES
Based on EdgeX Foundry’s Core Data Service, Edge Historian is optimized by IOTech for persistent, high-throughput time-series storage. It uses TimescaleDB to store large volumes of device telemetry data, supporting high-speed reads and writes, compression, and retention tuning at scale.
The service ingests and stores data from the following Edge Central and EdgeX Foundry sources:
Time-stamped sensor readings from connected edge devices.
Records of device commands and control actions.
Real-time data published over the platform’s internal MQTT bus.
Data from applications using the provided REST APIs.
