What is REST?
- REST (REpresentation State Transfer) is an architectural design for providing standards between computer systems on the web
- Devices that are conformant with this architecture are said to be RESTful and will implement a REST API
- RESTful architectures are inherently client/server based, with web clients or devices invoking well-defined operations via the REST API. Endpoints are defined by a Uniform Resource Identifier (URI)
- REST clients and servers exchange representations of resources by using this REST API over a well-defined protocol. Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) is the most common, but REST does not mandate it
- REST APIs are stateless, meaning that each request from the client to the server must contain all of the information that is required to complete the request. The entire session state therefore must be kept locally at the client side
IOTech's REST device connector allows third-party applications, such as Point of Sale (POS) and Computer Vision analytics systems to push data using the REST protocol
The REST device connector implements the following key features:
- One-way communication, i.e., pushing data
- Asynchronous readings
- POST requests
- Parametrized endpoints
- Support for Boolean, Int8, Uint8, Int16, Uint16, Int32, Uint32, Int64, Uint64, Float32, Float64 and String data types
