The latest release of open edge computing platform features new ease-of-use and industrial connectivity features.

Edinburgh, UK – August 25, 2020, IOTech, the edge software company, today announced the release of its Edge Xpert v1.7, the latest version of the company’s comprehensive and extensible edge computing platform.  Based on the EdgeX Foundry ‘Geneva’ release it also includes many features that are exclusive to Edge Xpert.

The vendor-neutral Edge Xpert is an open edge computing platform designed to greatly simplify and decrease OT and IT integration effort at the edge. It provides new features to reduce development effort, time to market and, ultimately, the total cost and business risk of developing edge computing solutions.

Edge Xpert 1.7 is another major step forward for IOTech and our vision of delivering openness and interoperability at the edge,” said Keith SteeleIOTech founder and CEO. “The new tooling and device connectors that support industrial systems—and now also smart cameras and video equipment—mean our Edge Xpert customers can quickly develop innovative solutions. They can do this for a wide variety of exciting edge use cases, including computer vision inference.”

Edge Xpert 1.7 provides new tooling that helps simplify the onboarding of new devices and sensors onto the platform. A number of industrial-grade connectors have also been added, including EtherNet/IP, OPC-UA Publish/Subscribe, CANopen and REST-based devices.

Another key capability of Edge Xpert 1.7 is its connectivity to smart IP cameras. A new IOTech connector supporting the ONVIF standard allows the platform to configure and control many cameras and pieces of video equipment.

Edge Xpert 1.7 also includes all the key features provided by the EdgeX Geneva release:

  • New lightweight Go-based rules microservice in the form of EMQ’s Kuiper rules engine
  • Dynamic device provisioning capability enabling protocols that support discovery to automatically onboard devices
  • Alternate and pluggable messaging support between the EdgeX microservices (e.g., MQTT or ZeroMQ)
  • Better security with secrets stored per microservice

Edge Xpert leverages the Linux Foundation’s EdgeX Foundry open-source platform to create a commercially supported solution for a wide variety of verticals, including industrial automation, manufacturing, energy and utilities, transportation and retail.
